Cuenca is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace. If you have just one day, this walking route connects the traditional neighborhood of San Sebastián with the Historic Center and the Tomebamba River. Leave room for a museum visit, a coffee stop or a longer lunch, and adjust the plan to the weather and opening hours.
Start in San Sebastián
Begin around San Sebastián Square, one of Cuenca’s traditional neighborhood centers. If it is open, the Municipal Museum of Modern Art is a worthwhile first stop; it occupies the former Casa de la Temperancia. Check the museum’s current schedule before setting out.
From the square, walk toward the center along Bolívar Street. Take your time: the route passes heritage buildings, courtyards and everyday neighborhood scenes that are easy to miss when you hurry.
Continue to the city’s central squares
Make your way to Calderón Park and explore the streets around it. The New Cathedral and the Old Cathedral face the park and offer a sense of how Cuenca’s religious and civic life has developed over time. A short walk away, the Flower Market is a colorful place to pause and take in the local atmosphere.
Choose a nearby café or restaurant for lunch, then give yourself a moment to rest before continuing on foot.
Walk down to the Barranco and the Tomebamba River
In the afternoon, head toward the Barranco, where the historic streets meet the river. Follow the riverside walk and enjoy the changing views of bridges, old houses and the Tomebamba. You can continue toward the Broken Bridge and the Todos Santos area, then return at your own pace.
Make the day your own
If you still have time and energy, add a visit to El Vado or stop for dinner in the Historic Center. Cuenca’s historic core is compact enough to explore on foot, but there is no need to fit every sight into one day. The municipal walking circuits connect places such as Calderón Park, San Sebastián and the Barranco, making it easy to adapt the route as you go.
Practical tips for a one-day visit
- Wear comfortable shoes; some streets are cobbled and the route includes slopes and steps.
- Bring a light layer and rain protection, since the weather can change during the day.
- Check museum and church opening hours before your visit.
- If you arrive by car, confirm parking arrangements with your accommodation in advance. In the Historic Center, some hotels have parking on site while others use a nearby lot because many heritage houses were built before cars were common.
